What You Must Know About Painkillers

One of the most abused groups of drugs today is the painkillers. Painkillers are available in many outlets, and there are no restrictions in purchasing them, and that is why it is easy for someone to take the drugs even to relief the mildest pain. However, many people do not know that painkillers also have some side effects in the long run. Some strong painkillers have addictive side effects, and they might also cause some complications to the body. Do not just take painkillers because it is the easiest way of dealing with pains and you need to make some considerations and have some information about these drugs.

Painkillers exist in many types, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of them. NSAIDs are available in different brands such as Motrin, Celebrex, Advil and Voltaren and they have been as the best way of relieving pain, inflammations and fever problems. Most people get quick relief from using these drugs but after prolonged use; they have some harmful effects on the body. Research has revealed that these drugs contribute to the risk of a person suffering from a heart disease after some time. Diclofenac is considered as the worst of the drugs followed by ibuprofen which also has notable side effects. It is not unique to see a person take these drugs for minor injuries such as sports injuries and sometimes arthritis. NSAIDs enhance the production of platelets whose excess quantities can block blood vessels thus hinder smooth blood circulation to all body parts. Further, these drugs are acidic thus in the long term; they lead to corrosion of stomach lining and gastric inflammation which might cause stomach ulcers.

Another notable group of painkillers is called opioid painkillers, and it includes Vicodin, oxycodone, morphine, and tramadol. These drugs are powerful than NSAIDs, and they are mostly recommended for treatment of chronic pains which may include back pains. They are quite useful although they have considerable health risks. They function by interfering with a section of the brain which has emotion receptors. Whenever you are in pain, you will not feel anything because the drugs interfere with pain signals to the brain and additionally, they are addictive. Patients who have been on these drugs do not respond to other mild painkillers, and in the absence of opioids, the patients would experience excruciating pain.

It might be difficult to realize that you have a drug addiction from a painkiller but whenever you notice that you do not respond to other mild painkillers, you need to seek assistance immediately. You should also refrain from taking strong painkillers unless you have a doctor’s prescription. Opt for physiotherapy and body stretching as an alternative to pain relief. Do not extend the use of painkillers above the period which the doctor stipulated.
